Socks - Garden in Sochi
Garden in Sochi belongs to a group of paintings by Arshile Gorky, based on his childhood memories, yet the painting is meant to be ambiguous.
The artist was inspired by the memory of his father’s garden and although the title implies its location is in Sochi, a Russian town, the garden was actually on Lake Van, in Armenia - rumor has it, the artist thought it best to label the piece after a popular town, so what better place than Sochi? Another theory is the title alludes to the Armenian word for "poplar" tree, which was planted by his family every time a son was born.

Description
His emphasis on psychological reality based on his personal and tragic experiences inspired CURATOR to design a darker model, keeping the overall melancholic feeling the piece bears. These paintings, composed by rough brushstrokes separating the function between lines and color (like a 6-year-old who’s still learning how to paint inside the lines), represent a critical phase in Gorky’s artistic development where he combines Picasso’s cubist style and Miró’s biomorphic forms and color palettes, creating his unique style.
