Socks - Montmartre at Night
Boulevard Montmartre at Night shows the busy Parisian boulevard at night after a downpour, as Pissarro saw it from his hotel room at the Hôtel de Russie, where he produced a street series in which this painting is the only one depicting a night view.
This painting is not simply a Parisian street, but an impression of the street the artist represented all the elements in abstract vertical shapes and lines, using bold and contrasting colors, a sentiment carried on to the sock design to create unique parallelism with the motif.
Pissarro holds the record of being the only artist to have shown at all eight Paris Impressionist exhibitions and he was the mentor of names such as Cézanne, van Gogh and Gauguin.
