Socks - Impression, Sunrise
This work was painted from a hotel window in Le Havre in 1873 and was one of nine works that Monet presented at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874.
Despite its fame, this painting is in some ways atypical of Monet's work at that time and of Impressionism in general, as it shows few elements of the Impressionist treatment of light and colour: the colours are very restrained and the paint is applied in very thin washes, limiting the details to the strict minimum.
Furthermore, the technique is very "rough" and would have been considered a preliminary study for a painting, which explains why Monet himself adopted the title "Impression" to distinguish it from his "finished" works.
