Socks - The Kiss
The Kiss represents the culmination of Klimt's 'golden period', during which he incorporated gold leaf into his work. It reflects the influence of medieval religious art and works created by artists in the Byzantine Empire.
Once perceived as pornographic, the painting depicts two figures draped in densely patterned fabrics in a moment of intense sensual pleasure.
Male strength is signified by the layer of black and grey blocks, softened by the feminine, organic scrolling. In comparison, the female energy is represented by swirling circles of bright floral patterns and wavy lines flowing upwards.

Description
Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian symbolist and the leader of the art nouveau group Vienna Secession. Artistically gifted from a young age, he made a living as a painter of architectural decorations before developing his own very unique style. Many of his work was centred around the female form - even being considered somewhat pornographic in his time - and extensive use of metallic gold in his palette of colour. The son of a gold engraver, Klimt incorporated the use of gold leaf into his later works.
